Why record an oral history?

An audio recording of a person’s life preserves their voice, memories and personality for future generations.
A treasured family keepsake, it also provides a valuable record for community organisations, libraries and archives.

What to expect from the recording process

Each oral history begins with an informal conversation about your life, the experiences that matter most, and the memories you most want to preserve.
Cosmo develops a tailored set of questions, then records a relaxed, in-depth interview, usually in your home or another place of personal significance. In the edit suite, the material is shaped into a polished audio work that remains faithful to your voice, character and history. The result is a broadcast-quality recording that can be shared with family, passed on to future generations and, where appropriate, preserved in public archives.

How will I receive the finished recording?

Oral histories are delivered on a custom pen drive in a gift box, with backup files supplied online.
Written transcriptions can also be provided. They are valuable for those wishing to draw on the material for memoir or book projects.

Recording oral histories with warmth and clarity

Authentic storytelling is central to my work. It's grounded in careful listening, intuitive direction, and an approach that helps people feel at ease telling their story in their own words.
Based in Ōtautahi Christchurch, I have 17 years’ experience in radio and long-form podcasting at Radio New Zealand.Earlier in my career, I directed and produced documentaries commissioned by TVNZ, Three and Prime (Sky Open).

My broader creative practice spans independent filmmaking, photography and writing. It is informed by documentary realism and a cinéma vérité sensibility.
I also offer story and idea development support for early-stage projects.

I took this photo of Johnny Toogood near the old Addington Saleyards in Christchurch. At the time, he was living in a shed beside the railway track.
It was a privilege to document his story while there was still time. Scroll down to view in full.
